The forces of the individual moving particles in a gas can add up to a considerable pressure. Because the particles in a gas are not bound together, a gas does not have a fixed volume like a liquid, and the particles are constantly pushing outward.
In this way, the gas will expand and fill all the open space. As a gas expands, its pressure decreases (fewer particles collide with each other in any given area, so the pressure also decreases).
When a gas is compressed into a relatively small space, it can create a lot of pressure (because there are more moving particles in a certain area). Aerosol tanks use these principles for a simple purpose: to push a liquid substance out.
